"The friends of District Attorney Benton of Missouri, who was summarily removed for violating the President's order prohibiting office-holders from making campaign speeches, are inquiring what is to be done with Postmaster General Vilas, who did the same thing. The Attorney General said that any other official against whom complaint was made for violating the President's order would be removed as Benton was, and Senators Cockrell and Vest propose to submit to the President copies of newspapers containing the political speeches of Vilas."—Telegraphic dispatch.
Yes, let Cleveland enforce his order against Vilas, a member of his Cabinet. He has nearly ruined the Democratic party by not permitting his office-holders to help the party. Now let him prune out the bad sheep in his Cabinet, including Attorney General Garland and Postmaster General Vilas.
