Full Text

A growing feature in the lobbies especially in that part of it facing the Richmond hotels or hanging around them, is the number of downy young gentlemen, who make an immense show of red pants, or military cape, gold lace, etc. In the admiration of the females of said hotels and the negro waiters.

Many of these "knaves of Mars" are arrant impostors and the gaudier their mitts, the more likely they are to be discovered as gamblers, couriers, flashiers, clerks, tailors, etc. or members of the legislature.

Their impudence is of entire sublime. They swagger in the hotel parlors, stretch their legs on the sofas, and never take their meals at the ladies' ordinary without their coats being buttoned up to their throats and a general air of dress in their backs, as if on dress parade.

There are some curiosities about these military dandies. Sudden transformations of dress are the coup de main of the dandy; and it has not unfrequently happened that some of the distinguished boarders at the hotel appear in strict civilian's dress during their un-military occupations of the day, and at nightfall attire themselves on the very tip of soldierly apparel, not forgetting buckskin gloves, to do the military in the hotel parlors or to change "the forms of Mars" in the vestibules of the bar room.

Really cannot General Winder take some measures against this military imposture and vagabondism. It is contemptible enough in some of its aspects but sometimes succeeds in serious impostures upon some classes of our people, which mistake a military uniform for a passport to society in Richmond. Orderlies and sergeants have more than once, we believe, been passed off in this city on susceptible young females as staff officers, and impostors have sat at the best tables in Richmond in the grandeur of gold lace and palmetto buttons. Every man who assumes a military dress he has no right to wear should be severely punished by the inspector-General, and treated with the merciless ridicule of the public.
