What About Paving This Year?
"In winter Main street was a series of frozen gorges and hummocks. In fall and spring, a river of mud. In summer a continuing dust heap."
Sounds like an accurate description of Leon's main street, doesn't it. As a matter of fact wouldn't it fit. What are we going to do about it? The street leading to the depot on which all of the heavy hauling is done, is well nigh impassible. Will we continue to fool around and just talk about paving Main street, or will we get busy and start the work as soon as the mud dries up enough to enable us to put teams on the road? Last year there was talk of paving several blocks on Main street, and the day was set to commence work, but some minor difficulties arose and it was thought best to let the matter rest until this spring. Spring is here and nothing has as yet been done in the matter. Isn't it up to the city council to start the ball rolling. We will all push and keep it rolling. Leon must have paving. It is one of the few county seats in Iowa without any paving. It is as good a county seat as you can find in southern Iowa, but we have let neighboring cities get ahead of us in the way of paving and they are making a more rapid growth. The main trouble is to get the paving started. There will be some kicking of course, but after the first paving is put in, property owners will be asking that their street be paved. That is the experience in other towns, and it will be the same thing in Leon. Let's get busy. Talk paving and keep talking until it materializes, and the sooner the better.
