LISBON, Aug. 8.—An old world
symbol comparable to the famous
Statue of Liberty in New York
harbor will meet the gaze of travelers
approaching the extreme west
of Europe if the present intentions
of the Portuguese Government are
carried out.
The statue will be to the memory
of Prince Henry the navigator, who
lived 1394-1460, and made the discovery
of the new world possible.
He was the pioneer of deep water
navigation.
The purpose of the memorial will
be to remind all coming to Portugal
that it was Prince Henry's work in
the study of winds and astronomical
navigation which paved the
way for the voyages of Columbus,
Magellan and Drake.
