We copy the following pertinent remarks from a communication in the last N. H. Patriot.
Much good might be done in the dissemination of truth, if those who profess to be democrats, would prove their democracy by patronising really democratic newspapers, instead of exclusively patronising the newspapers owned by or under the control, or in the interest of the British Bank-Whig or ship-plaster corporation party. If this course were adopted and fully carried out, the good effects thereof and flowing therefrom would forthwith be seen and felt in the improvement of democratic newspapers now established, and in the establishment of many more which are needed, where none are now taken or published; and, in a short time instead of three fourths of the newspapers in the United States being owned, or under the control, or in the interest of the enemies of civil liberty and equal rights, the friends of civil liberty and equal rights would have a majority of them, and then truth would prevail over corruption, falsehood, delusion, blind zeal and drunkenness—then our republican institutions would be safe—and then these United States would be, in fact, "the land of the free and the home of the brave!"
I would also urge democrats to cease patronising papers which profess to be neutral."
It is well known that a cloaking democrat, or a deceitful friend is worse than ten open enemies; and one hypocritical newspaper, professing to be neutral and impartial, when it is not so, is an hundred fold worse!
Our political opponents do not patronize democratic newspapers. Not they. They are not such fools—in that respect, at least. The "knowing ones" of that streaked, piebald party, composed of more sorts, if possible, than it takes to make a world, know their interest too well to patronize democratic newspapers; and such being the case, they know how to prevent and will not permit, their slaves to patronize them. Indeed they will not patronize any democrat, if they can conveniently avoid it. They prove their boasted 'Jeffersonian democracy!' by proscribing and turning out of all public and private offices and employ, so far as they are able, from President Van Buren, Richard M. Johnson, and Governor Morton, down to street-sweepers and lamp-lighters, every man who is really a Jeffersonian democrat, "because he is a Jeffersonian Democrat!" In this they are consistent.
In short it is a well known fact that the newspapers owned and under the control of our political opponents are patronized by democrats quite as much as by our political opponents; and some of them have made their brags of it
I am well aware some of our democratic friends try to excuse themselves for patronizing British Bank whig papers, by saying that they are so much more numerous, so much more ably conducted, and circulate so much more extensively than democratic newspapers, that they are the best for early news and to advertise in."
Presuming that "our democratic friends" have now had enough of such "glorious news!" as the British Bank Whig newspapers usually manufacture and publish to "bamboozle the dear people," I will merely remark that, by their patronage of such newspapers, they are guilty of taking the most direct means and of doing much to make such papers the most numerous and to enable them to be more ably conducted and to circulate more extensively than democratic newspapers.
In a word, they are guilty of causing and maintaining the very evil they complain of! When newspapers are well supported, persons of learning and talent will be employed to render them worthy of support and to conduct or assist in conducting their newspapers in the most able manner, Men of learning and talent are not apt to work for nothing, if they can avoid it, because Nor can proprietors of newspaper establishments afford to hire and pay for the services of men of talent and learning, to conduct or assist in conducting their newspapers in the most able manner, when their incomes are so small that they can hardly support themselves and families, as is the case with most of the proprietors of democratic newspaper establishments, and that too, of some such establishments, amount to more than thirty thousand dollars per annum, more than half of it taken from the pockets of democrats and "the dear working classes," to the great discouragement and injury of democratic newspapers and the cause of truth, civil liberty and equal rights, and as a reward of downright lying, deceiving, humbugging, cheating, abominable misconduct, plundering and swindling! Let us have a reform of such abuses forthwith.
