Extract of a letter from Charles Gale, Esq. of Milton, (Pa.):
"While I am writing to you on business, I may as well communicate to you my experience of from 15 to 20 years, respecting the Hessian Fly, which, previous to that period, had frequently proved very destructive to my wheat crop. Close observation showed me that it almost invariably attacked early sown wheat in the latter part of autumn, and after experience also proved, that wheat sown late, was equally liable to destruction by the ravages of that insect, in the following spring. I then adopted a middle course: sowing my wheat, if possible, between the 27th of September and 8th of October, and have never suffered any loss by the Hessian Fly since I adopted that course. I however am convinced that my crop now in the ground is materially injured by the insect, in consequence of the very warm and unseasonable weather that we had last October and a part of November. This, however, is one of those exceptions that will sometimes occur in general rules; the effects thereof cannot be guarded against."
