TO THE EDITOR

Since the birth of our nation men have fought and bled for the right to representation in their government and with this representation, the right to hold their officers responsible for their deeds. The Constitution has given us the right to choose our leaders who make our policies and if they fail in our eyes, to remove them from office.

Newington citizens are about to go to the polls and to decide whether to give up the right to responsible leadership, for the government of the privileged few.

Proponents of the council-manager form say that a nine man council and a hired manager is a more efficient and business-like leadership. So is communism, yet it is a doctrine we free Americans abhor. Who is to say if this council is to be made up of dedicated responsible citizens or of selfish irresponsible ward heelers, looking only to feather their own nest. It is said that it is more efficient to hire a capable experienced head to manage our town affairs. Is experience and capability a fair substitute for dedication and love for ones community. Will a rank outsider have a personal feeling for the needs and wants of his neighbors as would a dedicated, elected citizen of our own town.

In our history, the many have always been governed by the few, but we have always given one man the power of veto over these few. Do you the citizens of Newington want a man with an iron-bound business contract, to decide the future development of your town or do you want an elected head, who can be held responsible for his actions and deeds. Think before you give up these God-given rights as an American. Think before you forfeit your franchise to vote.

Main Argument

citizens of newington should reject the council-manager form of government, as it forfeits their constitutional rights to elect and hold accountable leaders, substituting them with an unaccountable hired manager and potentially self-serving council, akin to abhorrent doctrines like communism.
