Extract of a Letter from Stillwater, Aug. 11.
"This moment twelvemonth taken prisoner with Capt. Lane, Col. Alden's regiment, General Nixon's brigade near Fishkill, arrived in camp, and say, that never heard from Lake George two days since, after being obliged to swear they would not take up arms again against the British King--- they further inform, they were with about 4000 obliged to work at hard labor, and had for overseers Hessians and other savages, who were cruel to them in the extreme---that their whole force was at Fort Edward, having more troops at Fort George, Ticonderoga, &c. than were sufficient for their guards, &c. &c. Scalping is become a trade, in a day passes but more or less scalped by the savages; last night one or three has been within ten rods of our hospital. Most of our officers who are prisoners with the enemy are sent off to Canada, Capt. Lane exception, who is to return home on parole. General Lincoln is expected here this day."
