Full Text
When he was called for by the audience, Mr. Tallmadge, at whose invitation he went to the meeting, saw the delicacy of his position, and offered to make an explanation, and get him excused from speaking. But Mr. Beardsley declined to avail himself of the interposition of Mr. Tallmadge, and addressed the meeting with much fervor and effect. On finishing, Mr. B. was greeted with six rounds of applause. The meeting had hardly adjourned, when two or three democrats waited on him to express their regret at the course he had taken; but he signified to them, pretty intelligibly, that he was not accustomed to dictation. Subsequently, Mr. Beardsley called at the Log Cabin, and, after taking a small nail at the hard cider, voluntarily and of his own motion, enrolled his name on the records of the association.
These are the facts. The party papers can distort and misrepresent them as much as they please.
