MARION CITY.

The Wheeling Gazette, of the 25th inst., gives an interesting account of the origin of this city in embryo. On the 23d instant the steamboat Caledonia from Pittsburg touched at Wheeling (with two boats in tow,) having a colony of 200 persons on board, 47 of whom were children, all destined for Marion City. The Caledonia was also freighted with the frame work, sashes, shingles, &c., for twenty-five houses, besides household and farming utensils of every description, "from the humble spinning wheel to the splendid piano, and from the plough and wheelbarrow to the steam engine," In sixty days after their arrival they expect to erect 40 or 50 houses, among which will be a steam flour mill, and four or five saw mills. These, with a temperance hotel, a schoolhouse, and a church, will mark the first year's existence of Marion city." The Gazette says:

The city to which this colony is bound is now almost a naked prairie, on the Mississippi river, 150 miles above St. Louis, and is the landing for Palmyra, the capital of Marion county, Mo. It will probably exhibit in the course of the ensuing summer, what enterprise, well directed, can effect in the far west. During the last summer and fall, the land for several miles around was entered by a company of gentlemen residing principally in Philadelphia, Pittsburg and Wheeling, for themselves and friends. Late in December the site for the city spoken of was selected and laid out into lots. An agent of the company, in a recent trip to the East, has already sold $400,000 worth of lots, principally to mechanics, without making any public advertisements. The Caledonia and a boat now building, will ply between Pittsburg, Wheeling and Marion City, as regular packets.
