Editorial Comment:
Arizona's Shameful Record
Arizona legislators again have put the public accommodations bill in the deep freeze. It will stay there until next year because owners of 'discriminating' resorts in Maricopa County were able to exert more influence than those who campaigned for human rights and dignity.
Discriminating in the case of these resorts does not necessarily apply to good taste in furnishings, food and accommodations; rather it refers to unchecked discrimination against persons of color and against persons who worship differently from the resort owners.
Although the number has dropped sharply in the Tucson area, there are still several 'discriminating' resorts around Phoenix.
Not long ago the Camelback Inn near Phoenix caused a nation-wide stir when it refused to accept reservations from Jewish attorneys attending a national legal convention.
The incident caused much embarrassment for the state of Arizona. Passage of the public accommodations bill would have wiped away the embarrassment.
But it failed, and shamefully we must admit to visitors to Arizona that there are many restaurants in downtown Tucson and Phoenix which refuse service to Negroes.... Shamefully we must admit that many large hotels and motels close the doors to Jews as well as Negroes.
Next year the public accommodations bill will be re-introduced in our state legislature.
The time is now to begin a pitched battle to insure passage of the bill.
