Col. Benjamin Hart Disappears from His Hoboken Home and Family Seeks Aid of Authorities in Many Cities.
Col. Benjamin Hart, millionaire, and one of the most prominent and popular military men in New Jersey, is missing from his home, No. 123 Park avenue, Hoboken, and the police of every city in the East were to-day asked to look for him.
That Col. Hart had disappeared was first made known to the New York police when Police Sergeant Kipp, of Hoboken, called up Police Headquarters in this city and asked that a search of the hotels and hospitals be made for him. It is said that Col. Hart has been in ill-health for some months past, and at times has appeared depressed.
On Monday last he was at his home in the early morning hours. Later, it is said, he dressed with scrupulous care and left the house. What became of him after that is a mystery. According to Sergt. Kipp, when he left his home the Colonel was dressed in a black broadcloth suit and wore a silk hat.
Col. Hart is sixty-eight years old and five feet ten inches tall. He has a military bearing. His hair is gray and he wears a goatee. His family and friends are greatly worried over his absence.
Col. Hart received a peculiar legacy in 1895. He was notified by Disraeli Brothers, of London, that he had fallen heir to a small fortune left by his father. The father had deposited 15 consols, value being about $100 each, in the Bank of England in 1836. Col. Hart knew nothing of it until 1894, when he received a letter from a cousin in London, who informed him that his name was among a list of those published calling for heirs to English estates.
