General Lafayette and Suite, after leaving Monticello, the residence of Mr. Jefferson, proceeded to Montpelier, where they were affectionately received by Mr. Madison, and of whose elegant hospitality they partook for several days. After completing his visit at Mr. Madison's the General, attended by that gentleman and a numerous escort, repaired to Orange Court-House, where he was received with acclamations by an immense concourse of citizens. He was addressed on this occasion, by Governor Barbour, in an eloquent manner. The General's reply was, as usual, feeling and appropriate. After the Addresses were over, the General sat down to an elegant dinner, at which several just and patriotic sentiments were given. The next day he pursued his route to Washington, his arrival at which city was announced in our last.
On the morning of Wednesday the 24th (the day of the General's departure for Baltimore,) he had an interesting interview with the Delegation of Choctaw Chiefs, now on a visit to the seat of government. Three of the Chiefs delivered simple and affecting Addresses—during their delivery, the General appeared sensibly affected at the marks of respect manifested towards him by these untutored sons of the forest, and several times cordially pressed their hands. The Chiefs accompanied the General beyond the Capitol on his route to Baltimore, when, mutually bowing farewell, they parted. At the same time that the Choctaw Chiefs waited on General Lafayette, the Chiefs of the Chickasaw nation, a kindred tribe, also paid him a visit, and shook hands. They had previously had an interview with him at Monticello, the residence of Mr. Jefferson, on their way to Washington.
The General reached Baltimore at a late hour on Wednesday night. The Mayor, at the head of the Committee of Arrangement, was in waiting to receive him, and in the name of the city, expressed the sincere gratification and happiness which his presence occasioned. On Thursday he attended the Exhibition of the Maryland Agricultural Society—and in the evening visited the Theatre, leaving it at the end of the fourth act, when he was cheered by the audience standing.
Notwithstanding the fatigues he must have endured since his arrival in this country, the General continues in good health and high spirits.
