HARD TIMES—UNPRECEDENTED.

BATON ROUGE, SEPT. 11.

At the sale of the estate of the late John Davenport, sen. deceased, a negro slave, aged about 40 years, a black-smith by trade, was adjudicated to a gentleman of this parish for the paltry sum of five thousand two hundred dollars! The present owner of the slave observed that he would have run him up to eight thousand!

It is also stated that a few days since 70 superficial arpents of land, situated within half a mile of this town, have been sold for ten thousand dollars! Mark this, ye connoisseurs of the times.—Gazette.
