VERNON WORKS

A 700-ton shipment of castings and forgings comprising Aluminum Company of America's newest hydraulic forging press was unloaded recently at Los Angeles harbor.

Arriving in 88 separate sections, including one huge casting weighing 95 tons, the press now is being assembled at Alcoa's Vernon, Calif., works. The Schloemann-built equipment is part of a $4,000,000 expansion of facilities at Vernon. Designed with three power cylinders, it will be the most versatile forging press of its size in the United States. Operations at 2700, 5400 and 8000 tons capacity will be possible.

A new method of installation, developed by Alcoa engineers, will make the press earthquake-proof. Scheduled for operation early 1956, it will join a 1500-ton forging press already in production.
