Mr. Editor.—I observe this morning's Journal contains some severe strictures on the Hon. Mr. Durfee's Address, at the same time allowing it to be a frank and manly appeal to the people of the State. I shall not at this time attempt to vindicate Mr. Durfee from the charges which have been preferred against him, my knowledge of the facts being too limited for such an attempt; and if a vindication be at all necessary, I have such confidence in his abilities, that I believe him abundantly able to make it himself. In regard to the contest between Messrs. Pierce and Durfee, public opinion in this part of the State seems much divided, and there is no reason to believe there will be an union on either. In regard to the support Mr. Burges will receive, it will not, I apprehend, depend at all upon the predilections his friends may entertain for either of the southern candidates. Differing in the latter respect as I know they do, they will unite to further his election—which, if information collected from all parts of the State and from the best sources can be at all relied upon, is as certain as that Mr. Eddy acted against his constituents on the Tariff Question, the Missouri Question and the Presidential Election. Mr. Durfee has certainly in the main acted as became a Rhode-Island Representative, and I have no doubt he will receive at least an equal support with his adversary in THE COUNTY OF PROVIDENCE.
