CHARGE OF STEALING.--Yesterday morning, a man named Daniel Dunnavant was brought here from Petersburg, in custody of officer Fenn, by whom he was arrested in that place Saturday last, at the instance of Dennis Leary, a grocer, living at Rockotts.

Dunnavant was charged with feloniously stealing $60 from the pocket of Leary on the 25th of July last. It appears that Leary and Dunnavant, on the 25th of July last, were together, drinking freely, and on his return home Leary missed his pocket book and money. Dunnavant told him the next day that the thing he had lost that night he (D.) had found, and would return, but failed to do so.

Thursday last Dunnavant came to Leary and told him that the thing he had found in July was the missing pocket book, and that he had it, together with the money untouched, deposited in the hands of a friend, and would obtain them, and return on the next day. Hearing Friday that Dunnavant had left the city and gone to Petersburg, Leary suspected that his money had departed too, and proceeding to Petersburg, had Dunnavant arrested Saturday morning, just before the departure of the Southern train of cars.

Fifty three dollars in money was found on the person of Dunnavant, though none of it was identified as part of the amount stolen. The Mayor of Petersburg decided to send Dunnavant here for trial as the offence with which he is charged is alleged to have been committed in this city—and yesterday morning, Dunnavant was brought here in charge of an officer, and examined before Mayor Lambert, who committed him for further examination before a called court to be held on the first of November next.
