Miami and Biscayne Bay are growing more and more popular for the winter residences of rich northerners. A Writer in the New York Commercial calls attention to the fact that before Mr. Flagler built his wondrous palaces at St. Augustine and Palm Beach, Mrs. Julia D. Tuttle had, according to her means, made her habitation on the Biscayne Bay and transformed an old fort into a castle of enchantment. It is said that this region is the warmest place in winter and coolest in summer, a veritable tropic gem. And just now as Mrs. Tuttle had perfected her plans and looked forward to enjoying them, she died. We are told that her castle has been purchased by northern sporting men, with abundance of money, and that it will be transformed into a palatial gambling resort like Monte Carlo, in Italy. Before Mrs. Tuttle's time, the late Mr. George M. Thew divined the advantages of Biscayne Bay and purchased, with a stock company, the site of what is now the town of Miami. He was simply ahead of his time, and the scheme was not successful. Only one member of the company held on to his stock and he now owns a number of acres in the centre of Miami, worth many times what he paid for it. This is Mr Joseph Day, of Augusta. Flagler's money and railway have made Miami by placing it in easy touch with the rest of the universe, and developing its marvelous attractions. Commerce, trade, fruit and vegetable culture and fisheries bring increasing wealth, and the sports of land and sea are incomparable. It is our American Lotus land. -Augusta Chronicle

Mrs. Julia D. Tuttle transformed an old fort into a castle on Biscayne Bay before Flagler's developments; she died just as plans were perfected, and her castle was bought by northern sporting men to become a gambling resort like Monte Carlo. Earlier, George M. Thew and a stock company purchased the Miami site but failed; only Joseph Day held his stock and now owns valuable land. Flagler's railway developed Miami's attractions, commerce, and sports, making it America's Lotus land.
