There is a man now living in Sanford, in this county, aged 96. He was born February 28, 1724, new style. His name is Tibbetts. He is in the full exercise of his mental faculties. His sight, hearing and memory are little or nothing impaired. He has good bodily health. His person is straight and erect, and he is now able to perform considerable labor. He is a native of Somersworth, N.H. and well recollects before there was a meetinghouse, for public worship, in that ancient town: was acquainted with Portsmouth before any part of that town was settled westerly of the rev. Dr. Buckminster's meetinghouse, and when the town was but a small village. He recollects when the Ossipee and Pigwacket Indians, used to go down to Berwick in the summer months, in tribes, between the long peace from 1727 to 1744, for the purpose of taking fish. He continues to take a lively interest in the passing events of the day, and thinks, from the great experience he has had, that the separation of Maine, from Massachusetts, will be injurious to both parts of the commonwealth. He was a soldier in the war against the French and Indians, in the years 1746 and '47, and was stationed at the various garrisons, and out-posts in the towns of Rochester, Berwick and other places. At the time he removed to his present residence in Sanford, which is only 58 years since, there was but one dwelling house between him and Canada. He has lived under the reign of the three Georges.
