Lillington Club
Is Organized
The newly organized historical club at Lillington High School has been named the Cape Fear Historians by its membership of around 60 students drawn from grades eight to twelve.
Organization of the club is part of a state-wide project for Junior History Clubs sponsored by the State Department of Public Construction.
New officers of the Lillington Club are Beatrice Patrick, president; Tommy Spence, vice-president; Bobbie Ann Bethune, secretary; Elizabeth Byrd, treasurer; and Dorothy Coleman, reporter.
On Tuesday, May 18, at 2 p. m. the club will present as its guest speaker, Dr. Doris King, professor of history at Campbell College.
Another feature of the meeting will be the dancing of the Highland Fling by the Brownie Scouts under the direction of Miss Vara Lee Thornton.
Two club members will present brief papers. Elaine Byrd will read her original sketch of the history of Bunnlevel using information she collected from older citizens there. Earl Johnson will outline the history of a worthwhile movement in Lillington, the participation of the town in the Finer Carolina Contest.
Miss Bessie Massengill, county elementary supervisor, who is working with the State education department in encouraging organization of history clubs, will introduce Dr. King. Faculty advisors for the Lillington club are Mrs. Ray Womble and Mrs. W. E. Aubrey.
