Full Text
Julia Dean.
Julia Dean, the beautiful and renowned actress, who once rejected the hand of John Minor Botts, of Virginia, and some time afterward wedded young Hayne, of South Carolina—"the degenerate son of a noble sire"—the son of the illustrious Statesman who once engaged Daniel Webster in the greatest intellectual duel that ever gave eclat to Congressional debates—has sought a divorce in the Utah courts, and, in the meantime, compromised her fair name by marrying a Mr. Hooper, out in that Territory.
Julia married an illustrious name, and was not long in discovering that that was all—the balance was ineffable meanness of propensities, brutish cruelties, profligacy and total abandonment of all that is refined and honorable in manhood. She made him money like a working slave, and he squandered it like a besotted fool! It was a fatality for the queenly woman and the favorite artiste, and melancholy was its termination.
