ASSESSMENT NOTES.—Assessor James Sterling and his clerks are busily at work on the assessment roll at the court house in this city.

The fact that there is no office provided for the assessor by the county is a great inconvenience to that official and a hindrance also. He has no place for his books and papers and occupying as he does the court room is forced to vacate every evening every public meeting held there. Last week he was forced to move all his books each evening on account of the teachers' institute.

The assessor's office is an important one and there is much work attached to it so that it is almost imperative that an office should be provided for him.

Mr. Sterling has this year listed 18,525 acres of railroad land and 7548 acres of school land which has never before been assessed although deeds are held for it in this county. The board has reduced the assessment on money, notes and accounts 25 per cent.
