A letter from a prominent and influential gentleman, who has until now always acted with the Whig party, and signalized himself by ardent zeal and active service, but who has been driven by know-nothingism into the Democratic ranks, gives a cheering account of the prospects of our party in Franklin county, Virginia, and the whole contiguous region. The writer says:

"We had an enthusiastic meeting of the Democracy and anti know-nothings at last court, an account of which you will no doubt see in the Virginia papers. I don't think it is exaggeration to say the county will elect Democrats to the Legislature sure, and give Bocock 200 majority for Congress. The Democratic meeting spoken of was called for the purpose of making county nominations and adopting a system of organization for the pending canvass. You never saw such enthusiasm as pervaded the opposition to the new Order."

"The know-nothings were the bluest looking men on Tuesday morning after court I ever saw. The withdrawals since have been not one, two, or three, but legion, and still they come. When you come to Franklin, you will be surprised to hear who have been caught in this Yankee Abolition trap. But Bocock is equal to Norman (a great revivalist) in the art of bringing sinners to repentance. If I were to commence giving you the names of your friends who have been duped and bamboozled by this mammoth humbug, my sheet would fail me."

"I feel as anxious to see the know-nothings beaten in Franklin as I did to see the Democrats beaten when I was a long-tongued Clay Whig. I do hope this Yankee humbug will be rebuked in Virginia—routed, horse, foot, and dragoons—killed so dead as never again to be galvanized into life. How mortifying to think the noble old Whig party, of which I used to be proud, and to which its enemies ever conceded respectability for talents, for numbers, and for magnanimity of bearing, should descend so low for the sake of office as to abandon its cherished principles, and even its time-honored name, and fuse itself into this dark lantern Order The reflection is too painful to dwell on."
