President Coolidge was given ample opportunity to emerge from the Mitchell aircraft controversy without a loss of popular favor. In imposing what legal authorities insist was an improper sentence, the courtmartial left a wide open door for Mr. Coolidge to reduce the sentence without antagonizing war department officials. Mitchell's friends believe the five year suspension with complete loss of pay may be reduced to two years with pay. The popularity of the flyer would seem to indicate the president might take such a step, or possibly wipe out the sentence altogether after delivering a strong reprimand.
