of Mr. Clay, at Bethel, on Thursday
last. We were not present, and consequently have no report to make. From
the long and intimate acquaintance that
existed between the gentlemen, and Dr.
Winans' faith in Mr. Clay's political opinions, we felt every assurance that full justice
would be done the illustrious statesman.
We learn that the Dr spent much wind
and ingenuity to prove Mr Clay's political
consistency--especially his course towards
the United States Bank. This was a laborious undertaking, and one in which, had
the learned panegyrist succeeded, he would
have accomplished more than his hero and
all the federal fathers before him, were able
to do. A national bank is a very appropriate
theme for a funeral sermon-neither
one being recognized by the Bible or the
Constitution of the United States.
The moral portion of the learned Doctor's
sermon, which spoke of Mr Clay as a
Lawyer and a Christian, is highly complimented by those who heard it. We will
mention for the infinite pleasure of the disciples of Blackstone, in this section, that
the Doctor proved that by hard tugging, a
constant watching in season and out of season,
a Lawyer might get to Heaven.
