ALBANY, N. Y., July 16—Governor Alfred E. Smith is averse to long distant altercations.
He made that plain today when he declined to continue arguing with William Allen White, Kansas editor, who attacked the legislative record of the Democratic nominee.
Further Smith announced a policy of reticence on campaign issues and tactics.
Informed that White had answered his reply to the editor's charges, the governor said he regarded as sufficient his denial of White's allegations.
"My position is clear," Gov. Smith said. "As far as I am concerned, that is all there is to it."
Those closest to Gov. Smith see at least two reasons for the governor's aversion to indulgence in controversy. One is that he feels it is unfitting for one in his position. The other is his desire to let the campaign organization function in such exigencies.
Smith has not yet given studious consideration to his acceptance address, according to close friends, who say he has not yet begun its draft.
Even its date is undetermined, although it has been decided to hold the notification ceremony at Albany, some time after Hoover's notification in Palo Alto, Calif.
