SAVANNAH, Ga.—At the invitation of the Negro Division of the State Department of Education, a unit on tuberculosis was planned by the Georgia TB Association and five colleges in Georgia for their summer school workshop or health courses for teachers. The second workshop was held last week at Georgia State College. The time allotted to the unit was one hour per day for one week.
The objectives of the unit were to bring to the teachers complete information about the nature of tuberculosis; to inform teachers concerning tuberculosis control policies and practices in Georgia; to present information concerning hospital facilities for the treatment of tuberculosis patients in Georgia; to inform the teachers about the proper home care of a tuberculosis patient; to stress the importance of rehabilitation services for the tuberculous; and to plan the school's part in a tuberculosis control program.
The first topic on "What Tuberculosis Is and How It is Controlled in Georgia" was discussed by Dr. H. C. Schenck who discussed laws, rules, and regulations of the State control program. The second topic "Hospitalization and Treatment of the Tuberculosis in Georgia" was discussed by Dr. Rufus Payne who emphasized the need for more treatment facilities. "Nursing Care and Prevention of Infection" was the topic of discussion by Miss Olice Campbell who brought out the importance of the Public Health Nurse in tuberculosis control. Mr. C. B. Shroyer informed the teachers of the facilities available and how services may be obtained in his discussion on "Rehabilitation of the Tuberculous."
The topic "The School's Share in Tuberculosis Control" was discussed by Mr. L. L. Young who presented an outline of the school's share.
The last hour was devoted to summarizing the five preceding hours. Each period was divided into lecture and discussion sections.
Visual aids were used during the course, also Mrs. Mary Moten McKinney, Field Representative, Georgia Tuberculosis Association served as consultant during the entire week. Other consultants were Dr. H. C. Schenck, Director, Division of Tuberculosis Control, Georgia Department of Health; Dr. Rufus F. Payne, Superintendent, Battey State Hospital, Rome; Mr. C. B. Shroyer, Tuberculosis Specialist, Division of Vocational Rehabilitation, Georgia Education Department; L. L. Young, Executive Secretary, Georgia Tuberculosis Association.
Assisting with the workshop at Georgia State College were Miss Dorothy Ury, Health Consultant and visiting professor at Georgia State College; Miss Olice Campbell Superintendent of Nurses at Charity Hospital; and Miss Margaret Rhodes, Health-Education Secretary, Chatham-Savannah Tuberculosis Association.
The workshop was to be sponsored at Fort Valley, Albany State and Atlanta University also.
The first one was held at Paine College.
