The board has taken a ten years lease of the four-story brick building No. 162 Julia street between Camp and St. Charles streets, and are now fitting it up in the most complete manner, both with regard to the comfort of the men and the efficiency of the service. The main building has a frontage of twenty-five and one-half feet, with a depth of forty-five feet.
As we enter on the ground floor, we find the Salvage Corps wagon facing the main door, with stalls on either side, where are the horses, always harnessed and trained to stand without halters. Here there will be one man always on guard, and the horses being taught to take their places at the clicking of the gong, no time is lost in making ready for the start. Immediately above, on the second floor, is the sleeping room of the men. When the gong strikes, an automatic telegraph apparatus hoists the blankets to the ceiling, wakening the men, turns on the gas, stops one clock, and "drops a small flight of steps from the driver's bedside to his seat in the wagon, enabling him to go immediately to his place. The third floor is to be used as a reading room for the men: and the fourth floor as a repair shop for tarpaulins.
The rear building will have on the first floor the feed room, repair shop and general warehouse, with space for extra wagons; on the second floor a day sleeping room and bath room, and the third floor will be used as a drying room for tarpaulins, while the yard immediately across the alley will be reserved for the Protector's hose wagon.
The tower will have a base twenty-five feet square, and an altitude of 104 feet, with a lookout house, in which there will be a man on watch at all times, both day and night. The elevation will give a full view of the city, and with the constancy of the watch, afford every opportunity to discover fires in their incipiency. It will also be connected by telegraph with the harbor fire boat Protector, thus giving her timely warning of the location of fires, and providing for her timely use in furnishing water for use of the fire department when necessary: with the City Fire Alarm Telegraph: the American District Fire Telegraph, and the Girard Automatic Alarm.
The work is progressing steadily, and the building will be ready for occupancy in about thirty days.
