J. W. Hopkins of San Francisco is in the city.
The many friends of P. R. Buckley will regret to hear that he is confined to his bed at his residence in Franklin by a severe attack of rheumatism.
Rev. Dr. J. K. McLean, the well-known Congregational clergyman of Oakland, President of the Pacific Theological Seminary, is in Sacramento.
John A. Gill, the Pacific Coast freight agent for the "Vanderbilt lines" east of Chicago, has appointed H. D. Thirkield of this city his chief clerk. Mr. Thirkield, who has been with F. W. Mahl, mechanical engineer of the Southern Pacific system, for several years, as stenographer, leaves for San Francisco the first of next week, to assume his new duties in Mr. Gill's office.
