Full Text
Now that the National question is settled it is likely that both parties will settle down to routine duties again for another four years.
The victors are jubilant over their success while the defeated ones bow gracefully to the inevitable. This has been a remarkably orderly election throughout, and while the Democrats as well as Republicans were surprised at the overwhelming majorities, there were others who foresaw the result previous to election.
It is to be hoped that the party who will shortly be in power will do whatsoever will advance the prosperity of our nation. The two great parties who constitute the government of the country are now having a time about, thus enabling the citizens of the United States to compare their relative position and worth. Whatever changed the tide we do not venture to say, but it was undoubtedly a Democratic victory and there is where we stand. Democrats of Belleville you have fought your fight fairly and well, and have won. So be it.
