SALOONKEEPER'S WIDOW SUES RICH VETERAN

ELGIN, Ill., Feb 1 'I hardly knew the woman. Once or twice I helped her with work about the house but that's all.'

This is the answer of Major George D. Sherman to the suit for $25,000 for breach of promise brought by Mrs. Loretta F. Montayne.

Sherman is a veteran of the civil and Spanish American wars and is one of the leading citizens of Elgin. Mrs. Montayne's husband who owned a saloon died in April, 1908.

The Sherman home, valued at $40,000 is one of the show places of Elgin and occupies an entire block, facing Gifford park.

Major Sherman now nearing 70 believes Colonel H. S. Joslyn recruited the Thirty-sixth Illinois in the civil war.
