To Readers and Correspondents.
"Extract from an old manuscript" we
ascertain at once is from a respectable source.
As a respectable and useful production we
will readily insert it. The author is very
accurate in his political second sight and has
no resemblance either to GADBURY or PAR-
TRIDGE.
A wholesome moral essay, on the misapplication of talents, shall appear. It is pleasant to hear the soft voice of a Female Mentor urging giddy and frolic youth and lofty ambition to reject maddening draughts, and to quaff the purer "waters of Siloam, which flow softly."
Various communications from New-Jersey shall be attended to. Personal and private anecdotes, and ambiguous slanders must be avoided. Some of the Burlington county writers perhaps are only venting private spleen in attacking a political adversary. It is requested, in the language of the Bench, that no one wander from the point and that the gist of the argument be closely insisted on. Whether their Genl. be a weak or wise Lawyer, whether his Mayoralty be splendid, like that of WHITTINGTON, or factious like that of BECKFORD is quite irrelevant to the controversy.
We are told from authority which it is believed may be relied upon, that the result of the elections in the State of Maryland, is not in fact, to be considered as the prevalence of anti-federalism; but an expression of the public sentiment in favour of the election of Electors by the people, and that by Districts.
