On Monday night last, Sir Garstin, one of his Majesty's messengers, arrived here from Strelitz being sent by the Earl of Harcourt, his Majesty's ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary, with a treaty of marriage between his Majesty, and her most Serene Highness the Princess Charlotte of Mecklenburg Strelitz, concluded and signed the 15th inst. by his Lordship with M. Zestensteth, privy councillor and first marshal of the court of the Duke of Mecklenburg Strelitz, appointed and authorized thereto by their most Serene Highnesses.
By the dispatches brought by the said messengers from his Lordship, it appears that her most Serene Highness proposed to set out from Strelitz, on Monday the 18th, and to arrive at Stade, the 22d, where his Majesty's yachts were ordered to wait her Highness's arrival.
After the Princess of Mecklenburg was espoused by proxy at Strelitz, by Lord Harcourt, she was attended as Queen, dined alone at table, and was served by her attendants on the knee. On her way to Stade all possible honours were shown her; One melancholy scene only appeared, which was that all the people of Strelitz were in tears at her departure.
We hear that on the day of his Majesty's marriage the merchants of London intend to wear favours in honour of the day.
Tuesday last an express arrived at London with advice, that the Princess of Mecklenburg, our intended Queen, was at Stade on Saturday last, but could not embark, on account of the contrary winds.
August 14. The length of time appointed for the Right Hon. the Earl of Harcourt's continuance at the Court of Mecklenburg, is we are informed, is six days. His Lordship's visits to her Highness are to be made in form twice a day, viz. morning and afternoon: for this purpose his Lordship made up twelve suits of clothes, all remarkably rich and elegant, in order to appear in a new dress upon every interview with the Princess.
August 20. The Royal Wedding, we are informed, is to be publick, and the Door of Chapel Royal left open.
Two suits of clothes are preparing for the Princess of Mecklenburgh of extraordinary richness and exquisite workmanship: the one is entirely silver, the other a silver ground, with gold flowers, raised in a very beautiful and uncommon manner.
If the wind and weather permit, the intended Queen is to be landed at the royal apartments at Greenwich. It is said, that, besides all the accomplishments of a female genius, she eminently possesses the talents of a fine and nervous writer, of which she has given a late elegant specimen, in the pathetick strain, on the calamity of war, to which a part of Mecklenburg has been lately so much exposed.
The new Royal standard which is making against the landing of the intended Queen, is ordered not to be hoisted at the Tower, until Tuesday next, and contains near five hundred yards. The last was made on the coronation of the late queen Caroline.
