THE TACOMA TIMES

Yes, Yes, Rev. Trimble, But May Abate Should Preachers March? Lotus Bar

In answer to the question, "Should not the preachers march in the Preparedness parade?" Rev. Delmer H. Trimble said last night, at First Methodist church:

"This country is confronted at this time by two dangers: First, lest through her idealism as to universal peace, she become impractical; second, she is liable to become over-enthusiastic for armament, and become militaristic.

"The right and the truth, doubtless, lie between the two extremes.

"Our utter lack of preparation for emergency has been brought into strong relief by the Mexican crisis.

"Preachers surely should be the champions of idealism, but the most optimistic preacher in that regard must recognize that as nations are now articulated we need a fighting force, to play our rightful part in world affairs.

We must be big enough in the creation of such a force and its maintenance, to be saved from the sin of vain-glory and unsanctified power.

"If the United States is not big enough for that, where is the nation upon this planet that may be trusted?

"My personal opinion is, that one of the conditions of peace in Europe will be relative disarmament.

"While we need some further strengthening of both army and navy, all ought to be done with a view to using both this and our moral influence to the gradual and universal disarmament of the nations, and the establishment of an international court, backed by the combined armaments for the enforcement of its decisions.

"In the universal clamor, it behooves the preachers to keep their heads."
