READ AMERICANS!
HAMBURGH, JUNE I.
Letters from Holland, arrived to-day, contain the most shocking details of new atrocities committed by the French in Switzerland: One hundred and thirty-three villages, and seventeen towns have been entirely destroyed and deserted. Sion, the principal town of the Valois, was plundered during 24 hours, and afterwards completely burnt. The women were dragged into the streets naked, and after the most brutal insults, thrown over into the flames. Above forty children were stabbed with bayonets.
[Such will be the fate of the villages and towns, and the women and children of these States, if the French, or their partisans, once get the upper-hand, and this I repeat again and again, can be prevented only by the aid of Great Britain. People will not believe me: they are blinded by their own prejudice and vanity no less than by the arts of the insidious foe. So much the worse for them. They will be the sufferers; not I.
Never was infatuation so complete, as that which still pervades the inhabitants of America. With the above horrid example staring them in the face, they yet sigh for the embraces of the perfidious French. They listen to every sound of reconciliation with all the eagerness imaginable. Never did hungry gudgeon bite at the fatal hook with more voracity than they.]
