"The existing Tariff will not be interfered with. at the present session of Congress, either by way of repeal or amendment. The Whigs from the South take the highly honorable and patriotic ground that, even if the present Tariff should be admitted to require some modification, this is not the appropriate time—on the eve of a Presidential election, when the passions of men are aroused, and when this, with all the other great interests of the country, are sought to be connected with the transient but powerful passions of mere party—this, they assert, is not the suitable time to disturb the Tariff."
