Encouraged by their poultry marketing efforts during the past seven years, farmers operating the famous Rutherfordton Run from Anson to Polk County along the branch line of the Seaboard Railroad have organized the Seaboard Farmers Exchange for the more efficient marketing of their poultry and eggs in car lots.
"Beginning with one car of poultry sold back in 1923, this method of co-operative marketing of live poultry in car lots has grown in favor each year," says John W. Goodman, district extension agent for the State College in the southwestern quarter of the State. "Last year, 1929, forty-four cars were so sold along this line. Farmers co-operating are those in Anson, Union, Gaston, Lincoln, Cleveland, Rutherford and Polk. The work has not only resulted in a considerable expansion of the poultry business in the seven counties but has also caused an improvement in the quality. The buyers say they can dispose of the poultry now to good advantage because of the fine condition of the birds."
Since the industry has grown and there is a need for further expansion of the marketing work, the growers and county agents thought it best to build up some kind of organization to look after the actual business side of the venture. At a recent meeting held in Charlotte, representative farmers and the seven county agents concerned formed the exchange. B. Austell of Shelby was elected president; Frank Jackson of Mills Springs, vice-president; and R. E. L. Funderburk of Monroe, secretary and treasurer. One man from each county was elected on the board of directors and will be responsible for movement of poultry within his county.
The exchange will hold its next meeting in Charlotte on November 5 when the directors and officers will decide on marketing plans for the coming season.
