SEATTLE, Aug. 11.—(A)— Six witnesses who refused in a recent legislative Un-American Activities Committee hearing to say whether they were then or ever were members of the Communist party, were charged in Superior Court yesterday with contempt.
The actions, filed by Prosecutor Lloyd Shorett, accused the six persons of "wilful refusal to answer proper and material questions before a legislative committee."
Charges were filed against Ralph Gundlach, professor of psychology at the University of Washington; Herbert J. Phillips of the English Department; Rachmiel Forshmiedt, senior sanitary inspector for the City of Seattle; Burton W. James and Florence Bean James, co-directors of the Repertory Playhouse in Seattle; and Albert Ottenheimer, assistant director of the Playhouse.
