Head Coach Rudolph "Bunky" Matthews and his aides, Assistant Coaches Otto Harvey and Raymond Thornton, will bring the Bethune-Cookman College Maroon and Gold Wildcats, of Daytona Beach, Fla., to town this weekend to take on the Morris Brown College Purple Wolverines, Saturday afternoon, at Herndon Memorial Stadium. Kick-off time will be 2 o'clock.
Saturday's big game here will mark the tenth meeting of the Purple Wolverines and Maroon and Gold Wildcats on the gridiron. It will also mark the second time Atlanta grid fans have had an opportunity to see these SIAC rivals in action. The wearers of the Maroon and Gold made their first appearance in the Gate City in 1957, when they dropped a 39-0 decision to the Purple Wolverines. The Morris Brown-Bethune game here marks 10th meeting of B-Cookman, M'Brown on gridiron.
1951 and the games have been played at Daytona Beach, Jacksonville's Gator Bowl, Atlanta and Tampa.
WOLVERINES LEAD IN SERIES 6-TO-2
Of the nine games played to date, the Purple Wolverines lead in the series 6-to-2 and the rival elevens battled to a scoreless tie in 1953. In recent games, Morris Brown ripped Bethune-Cookman, 44-8 in 1958, at Tampa, then dropped an 8-6 decision to the Wildcats last year at Daytona Beach. Last year, both elevens scored touchdowns, but the Maroon and Gold Wildcats put the game in the bag when Earl Sykes ran across the double-stripes for two extra points-after-touchdown. With the Purple Wolverines eager to get "sweet revenge," the fans may be in for an exciting afternoon here Saturday.
In a statement to the press before opener with South Carolina State, Coach Matthews said he believed this year's team will have one of the best Bethune-Cookman records in recent years and the fans will recall that the Wildcats won their curtain-raiser, 28-8.
Bethune-Cookman series to date are as follows:
1951 M'Brown, 32 B'Cookman, 18
1952 M'Brown, 12 B'Cookman, 6
1953 M'Brown, 0 B'Cookman, 0
1954 M'Brown, 7 B'Cookman, 6
1955 M'Brown, 27 B'Cookman, 6
1956 M'Brown, 0 B'Cookman, 13
