Arrival of Mr. Morier.—The British frigate Venus, captain Crawford, anchored yesterday at Staten Island. She had a passage of 45 days from Falmouth, and 43 from Yarmouth, England. Mr. Morier, the British charge des affaires to this country is a passenger: as is also Mr. Butterfield.
The Venus carries 44 guns, and will remain here to take out Mr. Jackson.
Latest from England.—By the frigate Venus we have received London papers of the 6th and 7th of July.
Price of stocks in London on the 7th, 3 per cent. cons. for money 71.; do for July 71 1-4 8; 5 per cent. red. 80 1-8; omnium 3-4 prem.
The London papers state, that letters received from Antwerp mentioned that the Scheldt fleet was in perfect readiness for sea in consequence of extraordinary exertions at the personal instance of Bonaparte.
The fleet consists of 7 sail of the line and 5 frigates. The Toulon fleet was also said to be in readiness for sea. It consists of 17 sail of the line, besides frigates.
Vice Admiral Sir Edward Pellew sailed on the 4th from the Downs, to take the command of the squadron in the room of Sir Richard Strachan.
An expedition was in contemplation for the coasts of the Adriatic. Murat has assembled a large force and an army was drawing down to the Venetian coast. Egypt had been mentioned as the destination of the expedition.
The Courier of the 6th contains the following curious article: "The latest letters from America state that a difference which arose between Mr. Smith and Mr. Gallatin, in the council chamber, and in presence of the president, led to a display of ministerial pugilistic skill, which was, however soon interrupted by Mr. Madison's interference. Apprehensions were entertained that the affair would terminate in a duel."
The East India fleet of 19 ships, had arrived safe in England, last from St. Helena.
Lord Wellington's army in Portugal, is stated to amount to only 25,000 men, while that of Massena exceeds 80,000.
