The Elections.—As we have already
mentioned, in three or four departments.
elections have either not taken place, or
have been incomplete. A small number
of electors, desirous of preventing the op-
erations of the colleges, and of robbing,

supported by the majority of the voters.
quitted the assemblies, which not having
a sufficient number present, were forced
to dissolve themselves. In the depart-
ment of the Lower Alps, the same ma-
noeuvre had been practised. About
twenty electors, apprised by the first
scrutiny, of the wish of the majority,
which was declared in favor of M. Ar-
naud de Beaumont, attorney general.
refused to take part in the second scru-
tiny, and retired. However the zeal of
the assembly was not abated by this de-
fection ; and on the evening of the 8th,
seventy-seven electors had also voted.—
No more than ten bulletins were wanting
to complete the operation. It was cer-
tain that on the following day the scrutiny
might be examined, and that the re-
sult would be such as was generally de-
sired.
The box containing the ballots was
sealed up. The president. M. Gravier,
broke up the sitting at six o'clock in the
evening and convoked the assembly
for the following day ; but at three
o'clock in the morning the turnkey of
the prefecture declared that the box had
been stolen and broken into pieces at
the bottom of the staircase and that one
of the windows of the hall had been broken
The attorney general and judge
d'instruction have instituted proceedings
against the authors of this unheard of
violence. It is to be feared that the electors,
whose guilty manoeuvres have
rendered zeal ineffectual, will not be
assembled, and the department of the Lower
Alps, which has only one deputy to
nominate, will not be represented.

Event Details
In several French departments, elections were incomplete due to electors quitting assemblies to prevent majority-supported candidates from being elected. In the Lower Alps, twenty electors boycotted the second scrutiny favoring M. Arnaud de Beaumont. Despite this, seventy-seven voted on the evening of the 8th, needing only ten more. The sealed ballot box was stolen overnight from the prefecture, broken at the staircase with a window smashed. The president M. Gravier had adjourned until the next day.
