Award To First Sergeant Is For Service Beyond Call Of Duty In Battle Of Attu
A Central Pacific Base, Sept. 27.—First Sgt. William D. Fly of Laurel, Mont., was awarded the newly authorized Bronze Star for meritorious service in connection with military operations against the enemy during the battle of Attu by Major Gen. A. V. Arnold of the Seventh infantry division, in a ceremony held recently at a Central Pacific base.
First Sergeant Fly, a member of an infantry assault unit, received the decoration in recognition of his outstanding actions, beyond the call of duty, in the grueling three-week battle for Attu, tip of the fog-bound Aleutian island chain, a year ago.
A veteran of two campaigns in the Pacific war, First Sergeant Fly participated with the Seventh infantry division in the recent assault and capture of Kwajalein Atoll, center of Jap-held Marshall islands.
In addition to the Bronze Star, First Sergeant Fly wears the Good Conduct ribbon, the Asiatic-Pacific Theater ribbon with two battle stars, the National Defense ribbon, and the Combat Infantryman's badge.
His wife, Ruth H. Fly, resides at Route 1, Box 479, Monterey, Calif. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Fly, for many years residents of Laurel who now live in Billings.
