Sunday of last week Mr. Thomas Hughes, of Spottsville, a Henderson county village, went to church at some distance from home, intending to be gone all day, leaving his infant child in the care of a colored nurse-girl. After the family had gone, the girl rocked the infant to sleep, laid it on a pallet on the floor, and started off to spend the day in visiting among her colored friends. When the family returned late in the evening, they found the babe on the pallet dead and horribly gnawed and mutilated by rats.
