COMMUNICATED.

It seems to be generally conceded that the project of freeing the Turnpike roads leading from the upper country to Alexandria, or, at least, of lessening the tolls charged upon them on burden-wagons, which was proposed and discussed at a public meeting, held at the Court-house some time ago, is one of very great importance. That it is entirely, or to a great extent, practicable, is denied by few; and, there are none, I suppose, who do not believe that its accomplishment would be productive of immense benefit to the town, without injuring any interest worthy of a moment's consideration.

The greatest difficulties to be overcome are the discordant views entertained of the mode and means of carrying it out, and the general and unpardonable apathy on the subject, which exists among those more closely and extensively interested in it. Can these obstacles be removed? I, for one, think they may be, and easily; and that, by the simple plan of a Convention, either of stockholders in the several roads, or, of persons representing the more important interests involved in the proposed measure. In such a body, the various plans that have been suggested, (some of which, no doubt, are feasible,) may be fully debated and considered, and not only may conflicting opinions be brought to harmonize, and the doubts of the wavering be removed, but an interest will be excited and a degree of energy aroused, which shall carry out this pregnant project to the happiest results.

Such a convention will soon, I hope, be held; and, I trust, that the first step towards it, will be taken here. There is little doubt that our example will be followed by the citizens of those counties in Virginia, with which we have, heretofore, been connected in an extensive trade: for among them, a deep interest on the subject is already felt.

For the place of holding the Convention, I would name Alexandria, as the most convenient point to all.
