THE QUINTUPLETS' PRAYER
O, Lord, please don't let Papa and Mama take us away from this comfortable, healthful home King George has provided for us, where our good doctor and our good nurses keep us well and happy.
"You know, mother instinct is not mother knowledge; and that most babies who die do so as the result of mother ignorance!
"You know, Lord, we are the first quintuplets ever to live as long as we have lived; and that the chances are we should not have lived but for the scientific care we have received.
"You know, Lord, if we should be turned back to Papa and Mama Dionne it is probable that one or more of us would die before we finished teething.
"And you know, Lord, that our parents are not prepared to give us the advantages and the opportunities that we should receive as wards of the King-and as the five most famous children in the world.
"You know, Lord, we were afraid to come to this world; for we knew how human babies are neglected and mistreated through the lack of understanding of human parents; but you promised us that after we arrived we should be given the best of care. Please, dear Lord, do not let that care be taken from us. We desire to stay where we are--the wards of His Majesty, the King of England.
"O. Lord, we can not understand why Papa and Mama Dionne would try to take us away from our pleasant, safe surroundings and our brilliant future. If it is our money they want-the money that has been given to us by the world since we arrived-let them have our money. But please do not let them have us.
"Thanking you in advance, dear Lord, Amen.
