More than one million bushels of flaxseed will be shipped from Imperial Valley in 1939 if present acreage reports are correct and if yields are as high as growers predicted at a meeting of the Southwest Flaxseed association this week.
Forty thousand acres of flax have been planted in the valley this year as compared to less than 12,000 acres in 1937, Argyle McLachlan, secretary, pointed out.
L. G. Goar, superintendent of the Meloland experiment station, predicted that growers would receive at least 28 bushels to the acre this year for their average.
The tremendous increase in acreage in the Imperial Valley and the natural increase in average yields will bring about a more complex marketing situation, McLachlan declared
The association secretary urged growers to aid in the maintenance of a wide awake campaign to prohibit a recurrence of the cotton marketing problem of 1919, in which cotton growers were wiped out financially
There is every reason to believe that we can increase the acreage more without suffering a great deal, McLachlan said, but let us be ready for any complication of conditions on the present market.
Growers who attended the meeting discussed cultural policies and outlined improvements that have been developed in every portion of crop preparation.
