Cotton Strikers Celebrate Victory Entirely Too Soon Released When Charges Are Dismissed, Group Must Face Indictments

MADERA. Cal.. Nov. 15. (UP)-Conspiracy charges against 22 alleged leaders of a cotton pickers strike were dropped today when the men appeared in justice court for preliminary hearing but 13 of the men remained in custody when it was revealed the Madera county grand jury hadreturned indictments against them.

District Attorney George Mordecai asked the court to dismiss the charges. The men stood around court shaking hands, congratulating each other and saying they would appear at a mass meeting of cotton pickers tonight.

The men returned to the county jail to claim their valuables and personal property and Sheriff W. O. Justice re-arrested 13.men.

Two of the men, Carl Patterson, Livingston, Workers Alliance organizer, and Jesse McHenry. Negro, had been free under $2,500 bond. A third, Eugene Roberson, is in the county hospital recovering from an emergency appendectomy.
