New Appointment.--Capt. Dive Dankwarte has been appointed Postmaster at Northyarmouth!!--if anything was wanting to complete the character of the Postmaster General it was this appointment, and the manner by which it was made. By him the best recommendations are disregarded, and treated with indecent contumely.--Instead of inquiring, is he honest? is he capable? or is he in the best situation to accommodate the town? it is only inquired if the candidate is of the right party. But in this appointment there is something still more exceptionable--that of appointing by proxy!--Gideon would not listen to the recommendation of the best characters among us: but guided by his wicked and obstinate attachment to party purposes, sent on a power to a certain turbulent and unprincipled democrat, to select such a one as to him should seem fit--Such an one, undoubtedly, as should assist in the good work of revolutionizing the District of Maine, and introducing party dissensions in this flourishing and hitherto happy part of the country. Thus we see the work is begun, and the agents to effect it begin to shew themselves.

The inhabitants of Northyarmouth are so disgusted with this disgraceful procedure, that they are adopting every method to obtain their papers and letters by private conveyance. We heartily commend them for this spirited conduct: and hope similar means will be adopted in every place where the arm of persecution may reach. If the post-office department is to be prostituted to the views of an overbearing party--if postmasters are to be appointed by the agency of the most wicked and despicable of the faction, it is high time for the people to take the alarm, and secure the means of information by sources which cannot be controuled by measures so debasing to a free community.
