Windsor Man Is Identified as Assaulter Woman Abused on Belle Isle and Companion Is Positive John Guilfoyle Is the Man, Police Declare.
John Guilfoyle, aged 24, living at No. 71 Louis-ave., Windsor, is locked up in police headquarters on suspicion of being the man who criminally assaulted Miss Emma Teasch, No. 326 Junction-ave., on Belle Isle, Friday evening. The police say he has been positively identified by both Miss Teasch and Miss Emma Bock, No. 436 Solvay-ave., as the man with whom they were riding in a buggy the night of the assault. Guilfoyle was put "on the rack" by Capt. McDonnell, Monday morning, and while he did not confess he is said to have made some damaging admissions. Capt. McDonnell says he has a good case on Guilfoyle and will probably ask for a warrant, Tuesday.
Guilfoyle was arrested in Windsor, Sunday night, by Detectives Donovan and Crowe, of Elmwood station, acting with Detective Mahoney and Sergt. Reid, of Windsor. By playing their game cleverly they induced Guilfoyle to accompany them to Detroit, the real nature of the charge against him not being made known until he was safely landed in a cell.
According to the stories told by the young women, Guilfoyle, whom they did not know by name at that time, met them on Monroe-ave. Friday evening and invited them to go with him for a drive. He took them to Belle Isle, and Miss Bock, becoming alarmed, jumped from the buggy and ran to the Detroit Yacht club for help.
Guilfoyle, it is alleged, drove into the woods with Miss Teasch and there attacked her, after beating her into insensibility with the butt of a revolver. Miss Teasch is confined to her bed and will not be able to leave it for several days. The police say Guilfoyle has been arrested twice before on a similar charge.
