The inhabitants of Lansingburg, in committee, addressed the honorable Chief Justice Jay, who arrived in their town on the 30th ult.—Among other sentiments, they express their "regret and resentment at the evident prostitution of virtue and patriotism displayed by a majority of the canvassing committee in favor of Governor Clinton."

The Chief Justice returned a polite answer, but from motives of delicacy declined any particular remarks with respect to the late election.

"Our citizens know the value of their rights (said he) and it is hoped their efforts to maintain them will always be marked by temper and moderation, as well as by constancy and zeal."
